What is a therapeutic counsellor?
Hello, how are you?
Here we are in February with my favourite season on the horizon.
I think it is all a matter of perspective though, as longer days may mean something completely different to you.
I wanted to write about what I do as a therapeutic counsellor, as you may be considering engaging with psychological support but are put off by some assumptions.
Sometimes people hesitate to get in touch as they are unsure what the process involves, and their assumptions are just too powerful.
I love the visual above. I feel as though that is me in my professional role with the watering can.
What does the picture mean to you?
Can you see yourself as that person with that storm cloud seemingly ever present?
I am a professional that can support positive change, working with your completely individual, idiosyncratic set of experiences, in an organic and bespoke way.
We all have our own storms don’t we? That’s normal.
But sometimes it seems as though they will never pass.
I have professional skills that enable me to promote an environment in which you can discover how you have come to feel overwhelmed by your storm.
The picture shows the client sharing his storm, processing it, and ultimately making room for new growth.
The picture simplifies the process. It can be a lengthy, painful experience. But storms do pass.
They can be frightening, furious, and isolating.
They cut us off.
We can lose hope.
It can be difficult to ask for help, for whatever reason, but I urge you to.
Well, I would I guess, that’s my job!
I make no apologies; I believe in what I do, and I have faith in the process.
I use empirically, tried, and tested tools, translating the psychological jargon, making solutions accessible and familiar.
I offer a free, informal chat on the phone where you can begin to get a feel for how I work.
There is no obligation to take it any further, but it might just help your storm pass sooner, preparing you all the better for the next one.
